The idea is to send you more quickly and directly to exactly the information you were looking for in your query and make it easier to find information buried deep within a page.

Google snippets included sitelinks within the number one search result to allow users to get a taste of what the site offers, and reduce the number of clicks needed to reach their desired destination.

The search snippet includes contextual links into the section of the page that is relevant to your search.

If there are several relevant subtopics, they will all be linked beneath the search result for more precise access to the information you’re looking for.

Both these types of links take you to the same page of the main link, but they anchor you down or jump you to a specific point on the page.

This is done using anchor links within the page source.

It works as the world’s largest online encyclopedia – Wikipedia, uses them heavily to help users to navigate large articles more quickly and efficiently.

Here are some definitions of what Yahoo!, MSN Search and Google consider to be unacceptable SEO (aka spam). This list is not exhaustive. Some of these are discussed in more detail elsewhere.

• Keyword, Anchor Text and Domain Name Stuffing

• Using hidden text or links. These could be hidden in ALT tags of images or made the same color as the page background so as to appear invisible to the end user. Style Sheets (CSS Spam) can be used in an attempt to hide these manipulations from search engine’s anti-spam filters.

• Using techniques to artificially increase the number of links to your page, such as link farms or buying and selling links with the main aim of increasing rankings in results pages

• Excessively cross-linking sites to inflate the apparent popularity

• Cloaking, delivering different pages depending the IP address and/or agent who is requesting it

• Doorway/Gateway/Jump Pages – pages designed as an entrance to a website, each one of them optimized for a different keyword but which have no real content. These automatically redirect the user to the main website. This tactic is heavily used by adult content sites. Often with a Javascript mouseover redirect that sends the user to the new page as soon as the cursor hovers over the page content

• Duplicate Content. Identical or very similar pages that can be accessed from different URLs. Examples would be copies of the Open Directory Project listings or online books taken from Project Gutenberg. Someone could even steal the content of your website! Google has registered patent number: 6,658,423 aimed at detecting duplicates.

• Auto-generated content of no value to the end user. The aim being to either target keywords or to create excessive internal links

• Misuse or cyber-squatting of competitor domain names or name typos, for example: Microsofr.com

• Spamming Forums and Weblogs (Blogs)

• Excessive outbound links to websites that use high risk techniques or Spam

• Hiding outbound-links either with Javascript or by redirecting to a gateway page blocked by a robots.txt file

• Link Hoarding, getting as many inbound-links while giving out few outbound-links

Few of these tactics would get a site banned from an index on their own. It is more a pattern of abuse that will trigger penalties. Many of these techniques can be automatically detected by search engine robots when they index the site. Website owners using commercial search engine optimization services should watch out if these tactics are proposed for two reasons. Any business proposing unethical tactics may not be that ethical itself and the optimizations may get the clients banned. There are examples of both of these happening.

Some black-hat schemes are more subtle. In the section on PageRank we discuss how the global PageRank available to a site is equivalent to the total number of pages. The structure of a website can be used to distribute this ranking within the site. For example a hierarchies feed PageRank back to the top or home page of the site.

It would be possible to construct a site where pages below the home page are interconnected and each has a connection to the home page. For a site with only 10 pages and no incoming links the home page has over 3 times the average PageRank of 1.0.

This sort of structure is quite common for presentations and books that should be followed sequentially. Imagine a site with thousands of pages of content. The search engines warn against using automatically generated pages for exactly this reason. However content is freely available on the Web, an example would be the online books available as part of Project Gutenberg. Most of these are now out of copyright and Project Gutenberg puts very limited restrictions on redistribution.

It would be feasible to create many pages of content in many different ways and it would be difficult for search engines to automatically classify this as duplicate content. The site structure, while giving a boost to pages at the top of the hierarchy would be in keeping with a book format. Unfortunately there is little new under the sun. If you think up a new SEO angle the chances are it has already been done. In the above example an SEO expert has created just such as classic literate site, it has a healthy PR6 and the owner makes a living from content targeted advertising.

Prior to July, no one cared about optimizing their sites to appear high in Yahoo! or MSN organic search results.

Thanks to the Yahoo-Bing, deal, however, Seth Besmertnik, CEO and Co-Founder of SEO firm Conductor, says clients are gearing up to approach SEO with Bing in mind.

Together, the companies will have about 30% of the search market, as compared to the 19% and 8% shares they have now.

Yahoo CEO said, “[Readers] only spend about 3 percent of their time on the Internet doing search,” she said.

“The other 97 is being entertained, being informed, communicating with friends … so that’s what Yahoo! is going to do best,” she said to CNBC.

Among other things Bartz said that a very important aspect of the company’s strategy is to arrange content for users so as to become the center of their online life.

For all the hoopla about its blockbuster search and advertising partnership with Microsoft, Yahoo said it planned to keep its feet firmly planted in the search business.

Yahoo executives introduced new features of its search service, which remains independent pending regulatory review of the Microsoft partnership.

But they also said that once the deal is consummated and Yahoo begins to use Microsoft’s Bing for the nuts and bolts of its search service, Yahoo would continue to offer a distinct look and feel to its search results.

Yahoo also unveiled long-expected features in its mail service, and new functionality, including video chat in Messenger, its instant messaging service.

You can own any street in the world, you can build houses, castles, and skyscrapers on your streets, and anybody who comes on your street will have to pay rent.

The Google Monopoly game will also feature Monopoly Chance Cards that will allow you to build Hazards on your enemy’s streets. If you cannot be world’s richest person in real life, then you might be able to become world’s richest great landowner.

Although all the details about the game are not official, it is rumored that all players will start with $3 million to buy streets from all over the world.

According to the Guardian, if you’re beaten to a property, “you can make the owner an offer.

If they don’t reply in seven days, this offer is automatically accepted, no matter how contemptible it may be.”

Each property also immediately receives rent, so in theory you’d just keep on buying property as the money becomes available.

As most know, Gmail has had hiccups today.

However, Google announced on its Apps Status Dashboard that Gmail service had been restored.

Users in various locations confirmed that Gmail was working. The company did not say what caused the outage, which lasted nearly two hours.

Google said that the problem was affecting so many of its customers that it decided to also notify users on the Gmail Blog.

Engineering director David Besbris described the problem as a “minor issue,” but provided no clues as to what caused the outage.

“We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and will get Gmail back up and running as soon as possible,” he said.

The Marraige began with a traditional Indian wedding, followed by a typical vegetarian Karnataka lunch and reception. This will be followed by a reception in New York in September.

Akshata’ clad in a splendid orange ghagra-choli, and her husband Sunak, in a dapper suit, welcomed the guests at the Grand Ballroom. Attendees at the wedding were touched by the kindness and personal attention of the Murthy family.

Akshata is currently a venture capitalist in cleantech space based in California. She’s a senior associate at Siderian Ventures, whose aim is to build entrepreneurial, cleantech-enabling businesses with a global perspective. Like all Siderian team members, she is currently employed by Tendris, a Dutch cleantech incubator fund with presence in Amsterdam and San Francisco. Akshata is a marketing director at Tendris.

Like her sibling Rohan — who is a Microsoft fellow doing a doctoral programme in computer science at Harvard University — Akshata schooled in Bangalore. She received her undergrad degree from Claremont McKenna in California and did her MBA from Stanford. She has worked with Deloitte and Unilever.

The Murthy family’s combined worth as per the latest price of Infosys scrip, is Rs 4,000 crore. The couple is worth Rs 1,750 crore, two-thirds of which belong to Sudha. A larger chunk of Rs 2,250 crore belongs to their two children, Akshata and Rohan. Rohan is a doctoral student at Harvard University. Akshata and Rohan are independently very rich by virtue of being shareholders of Infosys.

Between Google’s generosity on one end and Wolfram Alpha’s terseness on the other, a growing spectrum of search engine approaches is emerging, with the aim of making it easier for users to find what they want on the web.

Microsoft offered its updated search engine, named Bing. In Bing, Microsoft seems to have gotten over the number of results (that is, links) as the sole parameter of search quality. Instead, the focus is on increasing the utility of a relatively smaller number of search results.

Bing does this by offering related search terms and search history on the left pane, as well as a quick view panel on the right for a sneak look at the link page without visiting it.

Wolfram Alpha, the computational knowledge engine, is set for a major boost with news that some of its content is to feature within Microsoft’s Bing search engine.

In a nutshell, Wolfram and his team have built what he calls a “computational knowledge engine” for the Web. OK, so what does that really mean? Basically it means that you can ask it factual questions and it computes answers for you.

It doesn’t simply return documents that (might) contain the answers, like Google does, and it isn’t just a giant database of knowledge, like the Wikipedia. It doesn’t simply parse natural language and then use that to retrieve documents, like Powerset, for example.

Instead, Wolfram Alpha actually computes the answers to a wide range of questions — like questions that have factual answers such as “What country is Timbuktu in?” or “How many protons are in a hydrogen atom?” or “What is the average rainfall in Seattle?”

Think about that for a minute. It computes the answers. Wolfram Alpha doesn’t simply contain huge amounts of manually entered pairs of questions and answers, nor does it search for answers in a database of facts. Instead, it understands and then computes answers to certain kinds of questions.

How Does it Work?

Wolfram Alpha is a system for computing the answers to questions. To accomplish this it uses built-in models of fields of knowledge, complete with data and algorithms that represent real-world knowledge.

For example, it contains formal models of much of what we know about science — massive amounts of data about various physical laws and properties, as well as data about the physical world.

Based on this you can ask it scientific questions and it can compute the answers for you. Even if it has not been programmed explicity to answer each question you might ask it.

But science is just one of the domains it knows about — it also knows about technology, geography, weather, cooking, business, travel, people, music, and more.

It also has a natural language interface for asking it questions. This interface allows you to ask questions in plain language, or even in various forms of abbreviated notation, and then provides detailed answers.

The vision seems to be to create a system wich can do for formal knowledge (all the formally definable systems, heuristics, algorithms, rules, methods, theorems, and facts in the world) what search engines have done for informal knowledge (all the text and documents in various forms of media).

Mail, Search and Messenger, Yahoo Updated all Services.

Yahoo has added slide of new features and updates to its three internal offerings – Mail, Search and Messenger.

This week the company announced changes to their email, messenger and mobile programs. But, perhaps the biggest move? An improved search results page which will give ‘personally relevant results’ to consumer queries.

“Your favorite email service now comes with additional social and productivity features. You can connect with friends and family, edit and share heavy files, right from you Yahoo! Mail inbox.

These new innovations in email represents our intense focus on delivering superior, personally relevant consumer experiences online,” said Arun Tadanki, Managing Director, Yahoo! India.

For Mail and Messenger, the changes are really more of a reshuffling. Messenger will offer users the ability to makes video calls, gives an improved iPhone app and the ability to quickly access updates to news, social networks, etc.

For Mail, the changes include better photo sharing, increasing the attachment limits for email and more social networking features.

Summarizing the new features, it includes:

• Social Networking : Users can now take advantage of new social features to stay updated on what friends and family are sharing online, including the ability to view the most recent emails from contacts and receive birthday reminders.

• Enhanced Memory :With more people sharing and receiving larger number of photos everyday, Yahoo! Mail has extended the attachment limit for photos and files up to 25MB (up from 10MB)

• E-mail on Mobile : Now it is easier for people to stay on top of their email with one-click access to check, compose and search email. Additionally, support for downloading attachments such as Microsoft Office documents, PDF files and photos has been added, as well as the ability to access personal folders.These enhancements will be accessible on over 400 devices with HTML browsers.

• Improved Photo Sharing: New multi-select and drag-and-drop functionality makes it easier to attach more photos to email, view thumbnail previews and rotate pictures.

1. If you are using a shared host, ask your host for a dedicated IP address for your site. This means that no one on the net shares this IP with your site. It is yours and yours alone. Many shared servers have tons of related sites on them. Having your own IP separates you from those sites.

2. Make sure your site validates as a search engine friendly site. The best site to use for this purpose is The World Wide Web Consortium. Their markup validation service will tell you if your site conforms to W3C standards and whether or not the search engines can read your site. If your site has errors, these may stop the bots from properly indexing your site.

3. Make sure you have a contact page with an address and telephone number and a form of some sort so people can contact you. Don’t list your email on the site unless you want spammers to send you tons of junk mail. Make sure the form you use on the site uses challenge-response system. From a user standpoint a search engine is a web page that allows keywords or phrases to be entered and returns results based on the relevance of the documents it holds in its index. Relevance is determined by a set of automated routines referred to as algorithms.

Search engines index many billions of pages of internet content ranging from web pages, images, Adobe PDF and Microsoft Word documents through to music and video clips. It would be impossible for a search engine to explore all the data it indexes in real time. Instead it runs a number of automated programs called robots (also called bots, crawlers or spiders).

These are programs that explore the content held in the search engine’s index. Starting from the home page of a website and by following the links it finds, the robot can eventually explore all the linked pages in the site and even discover new websites through outbound links. This process is called spidering. Each document that the robot discovers is ranked based on the search engine’s algorithms. This provides a concise picture of the content of the page and it is this information that is used when a search is performed.

The search engine builds up its index either by having webmasters submit their sites directly via free or paid submission pages or through discovering new sites during the spidering process described above. Obviously if a search engine doesn’t know about a page it won’t be found by its users. Yahoo! claim that they index around 80% of the Web although it is difficult to know how accurate this statement is. In order to keep the index fresh robots must periodically revisit a site.

The amount of time between visits depends on the resources available to the search engine and to how up-to-date the search engine wants to keep a particular page. Some of these periodic visits, such as those prior to the GoogleDance, generate much excitement from search engine experts.

The expression “Search Engine Optimization” is something of a misnomer as it is not the Search Engine that is being optimized. The phase describes process of designing or modifying a web site in order to achieve high rankings in search engines results pages (SERPS). Search engine companies would say that web designers should simply get on with producing excellent content and making their sites easy to navigate and let the search engines get on with indexing the resulting pages. Google, who originated the idea of ranking sites based on links puts value on the text used in those links. Recognizing this, web designers wanting to achieve high rankings in Google will strive to use meaningful anchor text and increase the hyper-linking of their sites. So long as this isn’t taken to extremes, which in any event Google could recognize and ignore or punish, this should improve the user experience.

Optimizing a Web site requires some knowledge of what factors search engines use when ranking a page and how significant each of these factors is for a particular search engine. Search engines use a mixture of on-page and off-page factors. On-page factors include the obvious such as keyword density but may also include less obvious ones such as the ALT text field used in HTML image elements. Off-page factors include the number of inbound or backlinks to the website. Different search engines put different weight on each of these factors; the exact algorithms used are a closely guarded secret and change frequently. SEO experts spend a lot of time analyzing how important each of these is to a particular search engine. If all search engines were perfect then they would all return the most relevant results in the same order. However we are some way from this situation so designing a site that ranks well with all search engines is difficult. The site may simply be a front for affiliate advertising. The site owner hopes that a certain percentage of visitors will find some of the adverts interesting enough to click on them and so earn him money. These website operators will employ whatever optimizations are necessary in order to attract visitors. These techniques are often referred to as Black Hat SEO.

This phrase is drawn from the computer security industry (and ultimately from Westerns) where black hats are the bad guys and white hats the good guys. Black hat SEO may use tricks including Link Farms and Blog Spamming. Black Hat SEO can be thought of as any technique that gets your website a higher rank in search engine results pages than its content would merit. These sites often have wildly fluctuating rankings for given keywords as search engines update their algorithms in response to these techniques.
